Wednesday, July 13

Today we visited an orphanage in the village. Actually the name of the organization is Food, Water, Shelter and the actual orphanage is called Kesho Leo. Kesho Leo is a very unique place that was set up by a group of Australians. The managers of the orphanage choose 8 mothers from the village (they received about 90 applications from women in Sinon). These 8 mothers live in the orphanage with their own children (most have 2-3 kids). Once the agency receives its license to house orphans, each mother will take in 2-3 additional children to care for. This creates a family-style environment for the children. We built a rocket stove for the mothers to cook with. Cooking with a rocket stove is a more efficient way of cooking on an open fire (which it the primary way of cooking in the village). The website for the organization is www.foodwatershelter.org.au

Here is the rocket stove (it is actually a little bit bigger then it looks, because I took this before we were done making it).
